Some time ago, Matt Cutts, one of the senior quality engineers at Google, released an excellent video that explains how Google works. I’ve included this video below and it is well worth a watch to help you understand the many many factors that help to decide which pages are shown in the Google search results when you type in your query and click the search button.

More recently than this though, infact last week, Google have released a new Interactive Infographic that goes into more detail and explains lots more about how Google Works.

The infographic is split into three parts:

Crawling and Indexing

Algorithms

Fighting Spam

And each part allows you to explore further information and links to useful resources.

It goes a long way to explaining how over one hundred billion searches per month are processed. Pretty amazing really!

You’ve probably seen the famous quote around before – “If you think its expensive to hire a professional to do a job, wait until you hire an amateur!” but it is ever so true in the Web industries.

At least once a week when I meet with new clients or even existing clients I hear them say that their son, daughter, niece, nephew, next-door-neighbour or other such connection is capable of doing the services that I am suggesting they purchase from me.

I could be wrong… but…

Now I could be wrong – some of these friends and relations might indeed have studied web technologies to degree level, and have maintained this ever-changing knowledge to current industry standards. They might have access to the latest tools and technology to achieve the job in the best possible way, and the experience to learn from successes and failures of past projects. I just doubt it!

In todays world, your exposure on the web if often the first time that any new prospects will come into contact with your company. Are you really prepared to risk the chances of having your business, its reputation and brand and authority damaged by a D-I-Y amateur who (even with the best intentions and will) could potentially damage this and destroy your business?

“My son can do my facebook marketing – he’s really into all that stuff”

I’m sure that your son has a facebook account. Most of the UK population with living parents have one these days but does he really understand how the mechanics of facebook work? Does he understand Edgerank or know how to use the Paid advertising channels? Does he know the differences between facebook business pages or groups or the personal account he most likely uses and how to choose the right ones for the right job?

Can he setup competitions or special offers to drive loyalty to your brand, or encourage people to like your business and share your information with their own networks. If he can then get him to do this for you but if not then be careful…

“My Daughter built a website once and she did some search engine optimisation with this. I’ll get her to optimise my website”

I hope that your daughter kept up her knowledge as search engine optimisation standards change at a very quick pace. Also, “doing SEO” means quite a lot to different people and there are many many ways to be going about this with the best intention but with devastating effect. I even see lots of very skilled website designers “have a go” at performing SEO on the websites that they build and for the most part they get it wrong. Search Engine Optimisation requires specialist knowledge and should definitely not be attempted by an amateur.

“Why do I need to use an email marketing program when sending with Outlook is Free?”

There is a long list of reasons why and i’ll tell you a few. When amateurs send out bulk messages using Outlook or any other email client, they usually add all of the addresses one after the other to the “To” line in the email. This lets everyone who receives the message know who else you are contacting and also shares your email address with all of these people. Additionally there will be no automatic unsubscribe facility to keep your messaging legal and compliant, and no reporting will be available to let you know who has opened and clicked on the information you have sent them. And lets not forget ensuring that the design of your messaging works on all modern browsers and email clients and that the content will not get trapped in any spam filters. Think i’ve said enough here…

So to summarise, it can be much more expensive to hire an amateur to complete website design, Search Engine Optimisation, Email Marketing or indeed almost any “professional service” jobs. The damage that can be done by an amateur is not worth the risk and the costs to put right the mistakes and errors can be huge. My advice – whether you choose to come with Eseyo or not, is to use a professional who knows what they are doing.

An Interactive Guide to Google Analytics

Looking for an overview of Google Analytics that’s comprehensive and easy to understand? The Simply Business Guide to Google Analytics covers everything marketers should know to make the most of Google’s powerful data gathering and reporting tools.

How does it work?

The guide points you to resources on the web that explain various aspects of Google Analytics functionality. Beginning with “Have you used Google Analytics before?” you pass through a series of yes-or-no questions. Every time the answer is “no,” the guide suggests a high-quality, vetted resource that should help you understand whatever it is you need to know about Google Analytics.

For example, “Do you know how to use annotations?” is one of the guide’s more advanced questions. If the answer is “yes,” just move along to the next question. However, if you answer “no,” the guide includes a link to an informational resource.

What’s in it?

The guide covers a lot! Everything from advanced segments to custom alerts makes an appearance, and the guide doesn’t stop there. Here are just a few topics you’ll find inside:
• Setting up e-commerce tracking,
• Deciding which metrics to track,
• Navigating the interface,
• Tracking email and/or advertising,
• Setting up goals,
You don’t have to be a beginner to benefit. Even those proficient with Google Analytics are sure to find information that enhances their knowledge of the platform and boosts overall competence.

Why should you care?

Nowadays, data matters. It matters because knowing what to do with data can help you and your clients improve engagement and increase sales. What’s more, Google Analytics is the most comprehensive, accessible tool of its kind. It’s got everything marketers need to monitor and boost performance, and going without it would put you at a competitive disadvantage.

Linkedin and Twitter are becoming as popular as Facebook for a large number of businesses across the world. While all of these are considered social media, they are different in the way that they are used. Linkedin and Twitter are better for short messages just to initiate contact with a client while Facebook is better for more personal interactions. Furthermore, Linkedin is better suited as a “front-page” for your company or as a place to approach new prospects with new business in mind, while Twitter is better suited to sending brief communications to your entire network of followers.

Making the most out of Linkedin

The best way to make the most out of Linkedin is to set up a company page and pay for a company profile. This way, whenever you get new staff in the company you can also request them to set up Linkedin accounts (if they haven’t already done so). Staff can use these accounts to network with new prospects.

Linkedin can also be used effectively as a research tool or a sounding board for ideas. A vast number of forums exist where users in every industry imaginable can discuss problems and issues in their respective fields. Your staff can have productive weekly or even short daily sessions where they research professional opinions about their field on Linkedin’s forums.

Linkedin can also be synchronized with your company’s blog to send out notifications about new posts to all of your connections and your staff’s connections.

Getting everything from Twitter that you can

Twitter is also a highly useful tool for any company or organization that has a huge network of followers. Twitter makes it incredibly easy to update your user base about latest developments in your industry, but it encourages short communiques of less than 140 characters. For this reason, it is best used to give instructions or send your users to audio, video, visual or text media.

Twitter can also be synchronized with all of your other digital social network assets. Users across Twitter, Linkedin, Youtube, Facebook and many more will be notified simultaneously of your new postings and information.

As with Facebook, Twitter can also be customized and personalized with your brand. It makes sense to hire a professional team who will do this for you correctly so that you can put forward a great presentation for your potential and current clients.

List out the social networking sites which make sense for your company, Once you have chosen the social networking sites that best fit your company, you can then position your way to meet your objectives.

Understanding Platforms:

It doesn’t take much time to set up an account, however understanding the format of content which is ideal for promotions is important. Every social networking site has a different style of writing and communicating. What seems perfect on Twitter will be considered spam on Tumblr. It is important for you to do your research and pick two platforms, keeping the targeted audience in mind.

Keeping your Account/Page active:

It is important to reply to posts and respond to customer queries as the customers want to know someone is listening.

Be an effective participant of a group or website. That being said, it is only as useful as the amount of attempt you want to put into it. Just like a face-to-face meet, a first impact is a long-lasting one. Make sure to make a profile that reflects your company/business.

Don’t Indulge in Spamming :

Avoid posting the same content repeatedly, personalise your content which will help you become the leader in the industry as there are too many companies harassing their followers with spam.

Content matters, make sure that your write up is informative and attractive enough from a readers point of view.

Engage your followers:

Choose your post wisely, make sure they don’t rupture your brand image. It is advice able to keep your page interesting and communicative. Holding interest of people by organising contests and giving out goodies, is undoubtedly the best strategy.

Have a fixed span after which you analyze your progress, try implementing new techniques after each analyzing report, this way you will retain your followers and attract new ones.

It is important to keep your blog up-to-date with relevant and current information.

Information that is appropriate for whoever your current audience is.

In this simple guide I will help to show you how to write effective content for your business blog.

1. Know (and understand) your Audience

First of all – do you know the audience for your business? Who is your typical client or customer?
Can you answer these questions:

Where do they live?

Why do they require your product or service?

Why would they choose to purchase from you rather than your competitors?

What other common interests or problems do your customers have?

When you have the answers to these questions understood then you can begin to write content that WORKS for that audience and is something that they want to see.

So let me tell you some facts about MY audience: They are mostly close to my office which is in Brentwood, Essex. Infact probably around 75% of my clients are within Essex.

All of my clients are businesses and most are small, medium or even “micro” in size. They all need help with getting their businesses online and all want to be found whenever THEIR audience search for them using Google or other engines.

Most of my clients have little knowledge of web technologies or SEO, and little time available to achieve anything effective for online marketing.

The aim of my blog therefore is to provide this audience with simple “bite-size” tips and tricks to help them to improve their own online marketing, search engine optimisation and social media activity.

2. REALLY know (and understand) your audience!

Ok, you have answered the above quick questions but could you know more?

Who do they follow on twitter?

Who do they like on Facebook?

What social events do they attend?

Which other brand loyalties to they have?

Where do your audience hang out online?

What other blogs do they read?

If you want to find these answers then there are simple ways and tools available to get them. Contact me and i’ll show you.

3. Produce EXCELLENT content.

You need to carefully plan and consider what you are going to write about.

Dont write crappy repetitive content that people will not find interesting – Spend the extra time and make your content brilliant and something that your audience are likely to come back to or to share with their social networks or colleagues.

Look at the kind of things that YOUR COMPETITORS and writing about and do it better.

Make your content LOOK INTERESTING. People do not enjoy pages of boring text. Use images and photographs to enhance your message and when possible visualise your story with infographics, graphs and other such media.

4. Get other people to write for you!

Ask your employees to write an article for your blog. Ask a client.

If not, we are able to help you to find good quality “guest bloggers” who will happily create content for you about your topic FOR FREE. You get to approve the content first and everybody wins.

5. Use tools to help you.

Right now i’m using a tool called Zemanta which is a free blogging tool that helps me to find other related articles about whatever I am writing about (you can see them listed below). It also helps me to find relevant images to support my content and appropriate links to add to my writing to make it more user-friendly.

There are thousands of businesses on Facebook and they are all competing for the same thing – engagement from users. Therefore a digital PR campaign that gives users an incentive to ‘like’ a Facebook page will give a business an edge in a highly competitive market. Once a member of the public has ‘liked’ a page, it is then up to the business to keep the fan interested and invested in the business.

Below are the key steps you need to follow to ensure your digital PR competition creates a positive impact:

Goals: Create clear marketing goals. What is it that you want to achieve by hosting this competition? It sounds obvious but by having clear goals you will be able to judge the success of your competition at every stage.

Understand your audience: Understanding your audience will help you not only to construct an effective competition tailored to their needs, but will also help you to keep them engaged on your page once the competition has ended.

Plan & create: Once you understand what your audience want, you can plan what type of competition you are going to construct. Making the prize attention grabbing is always successful in ensuring ‘likes’. This doesn’t mean it has to be expensive – just something that stands out.

Spread the word: Push the word out about your competition. Notifying relevant bloggers and online influencers about the competition will boost the reach of the digital PR campaign.

Consistency: Start as you mean to go on. Update the Facebook page frequently otherwise people will think you are inactive. Ensure that the way you communicate on your Facebook page is compliant with your brand personality.

Length: Try to avoid allowing your competition to run for too long. Page fans will lose interest if the competition lasts too long. If it needs to be a long competition, then why not look at breaking it up into stages, perhaps you could have a finalist selected at every stage and then an overall winner at the end of the competition. Be sure to publicise the winner through your social media channels and any other appropriate outlets.

Engage: Send out fun and interesting content. Use imagery and links to entice your fans to visit frequently. Give them a page worth coming back to once the competition has ended.
